What are Clear Aligners?

Quite similar to traditional braces, clear aligners are designed to help your teeth align into their proper position. Aligners are however made of clear strong plastic unlike the metal wires on traditional  braces. Clear liners (aligners) are custom designed from a 3D image of the set of teeth that they are going to align. They are made in such a way that they move the teeth gradually to the desired direction. They achieve this by pressuring each tooth, stretching the periodontal ligament surrounding it on one side, and compressing it on the other.

The body in an attempt to heal causes an inflammation, producing two types of bone cells: osteoclast and osteoblasts. Osteoblasts recreate new bone on the stretched side of the periodontal ligament as osteoclasts break the bone on the compressed side. The individualized orthodontic treatment we give you at Senan Orthodontic Studios will tap into these chemical processes and gradually align your teeth.

  • Straighten teeth faster: Clear aligners can take a shorter treatment time than traditional braces, depending on the type of malocclusion the patient has.
  • Comfortable and removable: Orthodontic aligners are made of plastic which makes them very gentle on your teeth and gums. The fact that they’re removable also makes them very convenient for when you need to brush or floss.
  • Fewer repairs and fewer emergency visits to the orthodontist.

What Conditions Can Clear Aligners Treat?

Clear aligners are great for treating several dental conditions. Top of that list is mild to severe cases of an underbite. It’s important to note, however, that severe underbite might require surgery alongside the dental aligners. Overbite, gaps between teeth, and overcrowding of teeth can also be treated with clear aligners.

Clear Aligners Available at Senan Orthodontic Studio

Clear aligners can basically be categorized into 2 major groups: in-office aligners and home (DIY) aligners. They may look similar at face value, but in-office aligners are installed by a dentist/orthodontist through each stage. That said, there are some names that will always come up in a clear aligners’ discussion. Invisalign for example is great at In-office clear aligners. However, you will often find that our orthodontist will recommend 3M clarity aligners. The DIY aligners on the other hand, are not done under the supervision of a specialist and it is safe to say: “stay away from them”

How Often Should You Clean Clear Invisible Braces?

To maintain good oral hygiene and ensure the effectiveness of clear aligner treatment, it’s essential to clean clear aligners regularly. Here’s a recommended cleaning routine:

  • Daily Cleaning: Rinse the aligners whenever you remove them from your mouth, especially after eating. Use lukewarm water to rinse away saliva and food particles gently.
  • Brushing: Gently brush the aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, antibacterial soap or clear liquid dish soap. Avoid using toothpaste, which can be abrasive and may scratch the aligners, making them more visible.
  • Soaking: Soak the aligners daily in a denture cleaner, clear aligner cleaning crystals, or a mixture of equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide for 15-20 minutes. This helps to disinfect the aligners and remove any built-up bacteria or plaque.
  • Avoid Hot Water: Never use hot water to clean clear aligners, as it can warp or damage them.
  • Avoid Colored Mouthwash: Avoid soaking the aligners in colored mouthwash, as it may stain or discolor them.
  • Store Properly: When not in use, store the aligners in their case to prevent loss or damage. Avoid exposing them to air or wrapping them in tissues, as this can promote bacterial growth.

How Long Should Someone Wear Clear Aligners?

The duration someone wears clear aligners can vary depending on the complexity of their orthodontic issues and the treatment plan prescribed by their dentist or orthodontist. On average, treatment with clear aligners typically lasts 6 to 18 months. However, some cases may require shorter or longer treatment times.

During the treatment process, patients wear each set of aligners for about 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing. Aligners are typically changed every 1 to 2 weeks as teeth gradually shift into their desired positions.
