Orthodontic treatment involves using consistent and gentle pressure to alter the position of your teeth until they are in the proper place. Straightening out your smile not only improves the functionality of your mouth but also boosts your self-esteem and confidence.

Today there are multiple different appliances available to achieve a straighter smile. It can be overwhelming to decide which orthodontic appliance is right for you, which is why the experts at Senan Orthodontic Studios are here to help.

Orthodontic Options for Adults and Teens

Traditional Metal Braces

Metal braces are usually what comes to mind when thinking of orthodontic treatment. Traditional braces are common because they are both reliable and effective for treating a range of orthodontic issues. Metal braces are also one of the most affordable orthodontic options. Here are some of the conditions metal braces can treat:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite

Although metal braces are highly effective, many people are deterred by their appearance. Luckily, today’s braces come with different colored brackets or elastics to make them more appealing. However, if a mouth full of metal is what’s keeping you from getting the smile you’ve always wanted, there are more discrete options available.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces, or clear braces, function just like traditional metal braces, but the brackets are made out of a ceramic material instead of metal. Here are some of the advantages of ceramic braces:

  • More comfortable: ceramic brackets are more comfortable against your lips and gums
  • Discreet: Ceramic closely resembles the color of your natural teeth, which makes the brackets less noticeable
  • Ceramic braces can treat many of the same conditions as metal braces

The disadvantages of ceramic braces include longer treatment time, and the ceramic brackets are more fragile than their metal counterparts. Breaking brackets can also prolong treatment time.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are the modern alternative to traditional orthodontics using brackets and wires. Orthodontic aligners are made of a clear, heat-sensitive plastic custom made to move your teeth into place gradually. Instead of coming in to have your braces tightened every six weeks, you come in periodically for a new set of aligners.

The obvious advantage to using clear aligners is appearance. Most people won’t even notice you’re orthodontic appliance. Like ceramic braces, aligners are favored for their comfort over traditional braces. Since they are removable, you aren’t limited to eating certain foods. However, clear aligners come with a bigger responsibility. You have to commit to wearing your orthodontic aligners for at least 22 hours a day to keep them effective.

In cases with mild to moderate malocclusions, clear aligners are just as effective as braces. For more severe orthodontic issues, traditional braces are typically the better choice for effective treatment.
